State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas
heretofore to wit on the twelvth day of March in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and fifty Seven a certain John Nicols of Saint Paul of Ramsey County Teritory of Minnisota by deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land Records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Margaret to be free on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and fifty eight and whereas application hath been made to me by the said Margaret Downs for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided and whereas also upon the oath of James H. Fountain that the said negro woman named Margaret Downs is the same woman mentioned in said Manumission and that she is now free I do therefore grant this certificate and hereby certify that from her own account she is now about thirty one years of age five feet & three inches high or thereabout of a molatto complexion and has a mark on her right Rist & is (natural) and has no other that I have observed (Seal) In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 9th day of January Anno Domini 1858 Robert J Jump Clerk |
