Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas John Brown
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law and whereas on the oath of Joshua McGonigal has been
proven that Said John Brown was free born.  I do therefore grant this
Certificate:  He is now about twenty Seven Years of age of Mulatto
Complexion and has a Scar on the Side of his neck caused by
a Kings Evil and has no other mark or Scar that I have observed
and is five feet and one half inches high or thereabout and was
born and raised in Caroline County
(seal)   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
           the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 14th
day of March Anno Domini 1860

hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
law:  and whereas on the Oath of William Barcus has been proven that
said John Carney was free born and raised in Caroline County.  I do
therefore grant this Certificate.  He is now about thirty years of age of a chesnutt
Complexion & has a small scar over the left eye and two on the back
of his left hand and has no other mark or scar that I have observed
and is five feet three and one half inches high or thereabout
(seal)   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the
           Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 14th day of March
           Anno Domini 1860
