Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Ezekiel
Colwell hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law  and whereas on the oath of SAmuel Roe has
been proven that Said Ezekiel Colwell was free born I do therefore
grant this certificate.  He will be twenty eight years of age on the
thirty first day of October Eighteen hundred and fifty nine five feet
five inches high or thereabout of a dark Chestnutt Complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County and has had a whelk
on the Second finger of his right hand and a Scar on his left
fore thumb caused by the Cut of a drawing knife and has no
other mark or scar that I have observed
            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
(Seal)   the Seal of my office this twenty third day of July Anno
            Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty nine

                                               Circuit Court for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas John Lewis
Groce hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   and whereas on the oath of Edward Wilson
has been proven that the Said John Lewis Groce was free born
I do therefore grant this Certificate.  He is now about twenty
one years of age or thereabout five feet two and one quarter inches
high or thereabout of a dark Chestnutt Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a Scar on the Second
toe of the left foot and has no other notable mark or scar
that I have observed
