Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Elizabeth
Satterfield hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law and whereas on the oath of James T
Richardson has been proven that the said J Elizabeth Satterfield
was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate   She
is now about forty five years of age five feet four inches high
of a dark Chestnutt Complexion & has no notable mark
or scar that I have observed
                    In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
             my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for
(Seal)   Caroline County this Seventeenth day of May Anno Domini
            Eighteen hundred and fifty nine
                                                             Robert J Jump Clk
                                         Circuit Court for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Catherine
Mattee hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to Law and whereas on the oath of Joshua McGonigal
has been proven that the Said Catherine Mattee was free born
I do therefore grant this Certificate.  She is now about twenty
years of age five feet high of a Chestnutt Complexion and has
no notable mark or scar that I have observed
                               I Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
                               my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
                               Court for Caroline County this Seventeenth
(Seal)                      day of May anno Domini Eighteen
                               hundred and fifty nine
