Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Margaret Ellen Ewing
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law
And whereas on the Oath of Charles W. Greenley has been proven that said
Mary Ellen Ewing was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate.  She is
now about 24 Years of age five feet high or thereabout of a Mulatto color
was born and raised in Caroline County & has a mark on the right eyebrow
and has no other mark or Scar that I have observed
            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of
(Seal)   the Circuit Court for Caroline County & this twenty ninth day of February
            Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and Sixty
                                                                               Robert J. Jump Clerk of the
                                                                     Circuit Court for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Richard Allen
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
law:   And whereas on the Oath of Richard C Carter has been proven
that Said Richard Allen was free born.  I do therefore grant this
Certificate.  He is now about thirty four years of age Six feet and
one half inches high or thereabout of a Mulatto Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County & has a Wen on the right eyelid and has
a scar on his breast Caused by the cut of a knife and has a Scar
on his right leg Caused by the Cut of an axe and has no other mark
or Scar that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affixed the
(Seal)  Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 5th day of March
Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred & Sixty
