Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Mary Baynard for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said act
free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born, And whereas also upon the oath of Nathan Whitby
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Mary Baynard for
whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty two years of age
on the eighth day of April last five feet and three quaters of an inch high
or thereabouts of a Black Complexion born and raised in Caroline County
and has a tolerable large scar on the outer part of her right leg occasioned
from the cut of a scythe and no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
(seal)   the public seal of my office this tenth day of May Anno
           Domini Eighteen hundred and thirty six

agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which
said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Elizabeth Willoughby of Caroline County that the said negro woman
named Keziah Willoughby for whom this certificate is made was free born; I
do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own
account she is about thirty two years of age five feet one and a half
inches high or thereabouts of a Black Complexion born and raised in
Caroline County and has a scar of a cut under her left eye and another
small scar on her left arm just above the elbow joint and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed

           the public seal of my office this tenth day of May anno Domini
