Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro man named Lewis Groce for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulottoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; and whereas also
upon the oath of John C Talbott of Caroline County that the said negro
man named Lewis Groce for whom this certificate is made was free
born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he was twenty four years of age some time in June
last five feet one and a half inches high or thereabouts of a Black complexion
born and raised in Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut on his
left thumb and another small scar of a cut just above his right eye and extending
in the eye brow and another scar of a cut on his left knee joint
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
            seal of my office this eleventh day of May anno Domini Eighteen
            hundred and thirty six                                 Jo Richardson  Clk of

woman named Mary Johnson for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in
such cases made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel
out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; and whereas also upon the oath
of Joshua Clarke of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Mary Johnson for
whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty years of age some time in February
last five feet one and a half inches high or thereabouts of a Black Complexion born and
raised in Caroline County and has a small scar of a burn on her right hand just below
her wrist joint (barely perceptible) and another small scar on her right arm where she
was vaccinated and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this 17th day of May A. D. 1836
