Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

inches high or thereabouts of a mulatto complexion born and raised in Caroline
County and has two small scars on her left arm just above her elbow occasioned
from the bite of a dog and another scar of a burn on her right wrist and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
            public seal of my office this twenty sixth day of April
            Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and thirty six

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit on the fifteenth
day of February Eighteen hundred and thirty a certain John K Harper of Caroline
County by a deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among
the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro
woman named Minta Lewis now calling herself Minta Green to be free when
she should arrive to the age of twenty six years and the said Minta Lewis
now calling herself Minta Green having made application to me for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made
and provided; And whereas also upon the oath of Thomas Burchenal of
Caroline County that the said negro woman named Minta Lewis now calling
herself Minta Green for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission; I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her age as expressed in the said manumission
she was twenty eight years of age in February last five feet seven
and a quater Inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion ^was^ born and
raised in Caroline County and has a small scar on her upper lip and another
small scar a little forward of her left ear and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto
(seal)   subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my
            office this tenth day of May anno Domini Eighteen
            hundred and thirty six
