large scar in the middle of his forehead occasioned by a scald and has two large
scars on the side of his left knee joint occasioned by a scaled and has a small scar
on his right arm just above his elbow joint and has a tolerable large scar on
his left arm between the wrist and elbow joints and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 12th day of January anno Domini 1836

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a
negro man named Joseph Pennington for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of
assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travil out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of William J. Pratt of Caroline County that the said negro man
named Joseph Pennington for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he is about twenty two years

of age five feet and eleven and one half inches high or thereabouts of a Black complexion
born and raised in Caroline County and has marks on the end of his nose and in spots about
his forehead and face with spots blacker than his natural skin by being burnt as he says
with power and has a long scar cut with a saw on the back of his left leg and has no
other notable maks or         scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office this 23.d day of February Anno Domini 1836

to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said act free
negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Abraham
Jump of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Henny Groce
for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty
seven years of age some time in April last five feet and three quater
