State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit; on the second
day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and two a certain Charles
Blair of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly acknowledged and recorded
among the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro
woman named Sophia now calling herself Sophia Friend to be free on the 1.st day
of January Eighteen hundred and three and the said negro woman named Sophia
now calling herself Sophia Friend having made application to me for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the oath of Abel Gowty of Caroline County that the said
negro woman named Sophia now calling herself Sophia Friend for whom this
certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the same manumission I do
therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her age as expressed
in the said manumission that she was thirty nine years of age in June last
five feet one inch high or thereabouts of a dark complexion born and raised in
Caroline County and has a tolerable large scar on her right breast occasioned
from a gathering and an other small scar of a cut on the first joint of her left
forefinger and no other notiable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this first day of December Anno Domini Eighteen hundred
and thirty five                                                                  Jo Richardson Clk of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named Ephrim Curtis for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said act free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of this State upon the obtention of a
certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Thomas H. Baynard
of Kent County and State of Delaware that the said negro man named
Ephrim Curtis for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he is
about thirty years of age five feet seven and one half inches high or thereabouts
of a brown complexion; born and raised in Caroline County and has a tolerable
