of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County has a scar of a
cut nearly perpendicular over her right eye another small scar across the bridge
of her nose another small scar crosswise her right cheek and another tolerable large
scar of a cut on her right leg and has no other no^ta^ble marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
             of my office this 6th day of May Anno Domini 1833

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit, Whereas application hath been made to me by
molatto man named Richard Philips for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to an act
of the General Assembly of Maryland passed at November session Eighteen hundred and five
by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of this State
upon the obtention of a certificate ^of^ being free born and whereas also upon the affirmation
of John Wright one of those people called quakes of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man Richard Philips for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he is five feet nine
inches high or thereabouts says he was about twenty two years of age the twentieth
day of November last past his complexion yellow was born and raised in Caroline
County has no notable mark that I have discovered.   In Testimony whereof I
(seal)   have hereto set my hand and affixed the public seal of my office this ninth
day of December Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and eighteen

Maryland Caroline County to wit; I hereby certify that the aforegoing and within Copy of a
certificate of freedom is truly and faithfully taken and Copied from the record or Registry
of certificates of freedom remaining in my office and I further certify that the above
named Richards Philips this day made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that
he has lost the original certificate of which the aforegoing is a true Copy and the said
Richard Philips further states that since he obtained the original certificate of his
freedom he has been scalded over his left eye with hot coffee which has left a tolerable
large scar at this time very visible   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
(seal)   name and affix the public seal of my office this 4th day of July Anno Domini 1833
