Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

some time in June last past five feet and one inch high or thereabouts of a dark
mulattoe complexion was born and raised in Caroline County has a scar of a
burn on the inside of her left hand and another scar of a cut on the end of her
forefinger and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
           public seal of my office this 2d day of May Anno Domini 1833

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro girl named Ann Jackson for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said
act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of this State upon
the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath
of Ann Vincent of Caroline County that the said negro girl named Ann
Jackson for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she was
fourteen years of age the first day of June last past four feet eleven inches high
or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County has several small scars of a burn on her right arm and a small scar
of a cut on her left hand a little below her wrist and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed

           public seal of my office this 2d day of May Anno Domini 1833

the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted travil out of this state upon the obtention of a
certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Joshua Clarke
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Hester Johnson for whom
this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty three years of
