Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a mulatto boy named Washington Dennis for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided; by which said
act free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention ^of a certificate^ of being free born; and whereas also upon the oath of Sarah Townsend
of Caroline County that the said mulatto boy named Washington Dennis for
whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own account he was seventeen
years of age in March last four feet three and three quarter inches high
or thereabouts has two tolerable large scars on his right wrist one on the upper
part and the other on the under part of the wrist and another large scar on
his left knee and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed Complexion
bright mulatto   Born and raised in Caroline County
(seal)         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
                  seal of my office this 8th day of July Anno Domini 1833

a negro man named Harrison Loockerman for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of John Allen Sangston of Caroline County that the said
negro man named Harrison Loockerman for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from his own account he
was twenty two years of age the twentieth day of August last past five feet seven inches
high or thereabouts complexion nearly black was born and raised in Caroline County and has
a very large scar of a scald or a burn on the left side of his head and no hair on the scar
and a wen on the back of his right ear and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office the 9th day of July Anno Domini 1833
