Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

certify that according to his own account will be Twenty years of age in
September next about five feet and a half inches high of a dark
molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline County his upper
foreteeth nearly a quarter of an inch apart and no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
(seal)   my name and affix the public seal of my office this
           28th day of February anno Domini 1828

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been
made to me by a coloured man named Solomon Hubbard for a Certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such Case made and provided
by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Andrew Covey of Caroline County that the said coloured man named
Solomon Hubbard for whom this Certificate is made was free born  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account he is
about twenty two years ^of age about^ five feet eight an a half inches high born and raised in
Caroline County of a black complexion has a perpendicular scar of a cut in the
middle of his forehead and another tollerable large scar of a cut of an ax on the
out side of his right leg just below the joint of his knee and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
(seal)   my name and affix the public seal of my office this 4th day of
March Anno Domini 1828                              Jo Richardson  Clk of

of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such Case made and
provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel
out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and
and whereas also upon the oath of James Johnson of Caroline County
that the said Coloured man named Jeremiah Bell for whom this Certificate
is made was free born and I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that according to his own account he was seventy
