four years of age the Second day of October last ^is^ five feet seven and a
quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County
of a brown complexion has a small scar Crosswise his right temple
and another scar on the right Corner of his upper lip Caused by the kick
of a horse and another small scar lengthwise on his left eye brow and
another small scar of a cut a little below the first joint of his left thumb
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my name and affix
(seal)   the public seal of my office this 2d day of May Anno Domini 1828

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;   Whereas heretofore to wit on the fifth
day of January Eighteen hundred and twenty eight a certain James Sangston by
Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the
land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain ^molatto^ man
named Isaac Benson to be free from and after the date of the manumission and
the said negro ^molatto^ man named Isaac Benson having made application to me for
a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made
and provided and whereas also upon the oath of James Sangston of Caroline
County that the said ^molatto^ negro man named Isaac Benson for whom this certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore
grant his said Application and hereby Certify that from his age as expressed
in the said manumission he is twenty eight years of age or thereabouts was
born and raised in Caroline County of a molatto complexion ^about^ five feet six an
a half inches high or thereabouts has a perpendicular scar on his upper lip
rather under his right nostril and another scar on the inside of his left
thumb another scar on the out side of his left fore finger the two last Cut
with a straw Cutter two scars on his right knee and a large scar on the out
side of his right knee causes by the cut of a scythe and the other on the top
of the knee caused by a gathering from the Cut by the scythe and a
large bony protuberance on the inside of the same knee originating
from the same wound of the scythe and another large scar on the top of
his left thigh a little above the knee caused by a spike nail having
