Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

expressed in the said Manumission he was thirty one years of age the twenty ninth
day of October last was born and raised in Caroline County and of a complexion
nearly black about five feet five and a half inches high has a small scar on the
left side of his nose and a scar on the inside of his ancle of his right foot caused by
the cut of an ax which makes the ancle bone project out farther and more pointed
than his other ancle and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal)   seal of my office this 14th day of December Anno Domini 1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application has been made to
me by a negro man named William Brown for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which
said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Richard Norriss of Caroline county that the said negro man
named William Brown for whom this certificate is made was free born  I do
therefore ^grant^ his said application and hereby certify that according to his own
account he will be Twenty Two years of age in august next about five
feet three and three quarter inches high of a complexion nearly black was
born and raised in Caroline County and has a large wart on the right
side of his right heal and no other notable mark or scar that I have
observed      In Testimony whereof I herto subscribe my name and
affix the public seal of my office this 28th day of February anno Domini 1828

freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by
which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of
this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Richard Norriss of Caroline County that the said
Coloured boy named Samuel Brown for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby
