Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Whereas also upon the oath of Abraham Griffith of Caroline county that the said
coloured man named Wesley Johnson for whom this certificate is made was free born I
do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that according to his own account
he was twenty six years of age the twenty sixth day of January last five feet two inches
and one third of one inch high or thereabouts of a Black complexion was born &
raised in Caroline county Has a scar of a cut on the Back of his right fore finger
between the first and second joints and another scar across the Back of his right little
finger between the second and third joints and several small scratches or scars on the
back of the same hand.  And no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
[Caroline]   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
[ County ]   of my office this 21st day of August Anno Domini 1830

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured man named Moses Cooker for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Doctor William Whiteley of
Caroline county that the said coloured man named Moses Cooker for whom this
certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby
certify that according to his own account he was twenty one years of age the seventh day
of July last five feet eleven and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County of a Bright mulattoe complexion has no notable
marks or scars that I have observed
[seal]   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
           seal of my office this 24th day of August Anno Domini 1830

and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Matthew Driver of Caroline
county that the said coloured woman named Rachel Loockerman for whom
