Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of
Marcey Fountain of Caroline county that the said coloured man named Nicholas
Fountain for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that according to his own account he is about
twenty one years of age five feet five and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was
born and raised in Caroline county of a dark mulatto complexion has a scar
on the side of his nose opposite the corner of his left eye and another small
scar on the top of the pan of his left knee and another small fresh scar on his
left shin a little below the knee and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the
(seal)   public seal of my office this 27th day of July anno Domini 1830

to me by a coloured woman named Lydia Shepperd for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by
which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of
this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Marcey Fountain of Caroline county that the said
coloured woman named Lydia Shepperd for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that according to her own account she is about twenty years of age five feet
two and three quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in
Caroline county of a dark brown complexion has a small scar of a cut
in the middle of her forehead in a standing position and another long
slim scar of a scratch obliquely crossing the back of her right hand
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the
            public seal of my office this 27th day of July anno Domini 1830
