Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Land records of Caroline county did manumit and set a certain negro woman named
Rachel Hawkins to be free from and after the first day of January in the year of our Lord
eighteen hundred and twenty four and the said negro woman named Rachel Hawkins
having made application for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided; And whereas also upon the oath of Christopher Jorden
of Caroline county that the said negro woman named Rachel Hawkins for whom this certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from  her own account she is about
thirty nine years of age; five feet four and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County of a black complexion; has a small scar of a burn on
the upper part of her left arm near the elbow and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 14th day of July Anno Domini 1830   Jo Richardson  Clk of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made made to me by
a coloured man named Edward Rich for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of assembly in such case made and provided; by which said act free negroes & mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Jesse Cox of Caroline county that the said
coloured man named Edward Rich for whom this certificate is made was free
born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that according to his
own account he was twenty two years of age the fourteenth day of May last five
feet four and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
county of a Black complexion has a ^large^ scar of a cut on his left wrist and another
scar of a cut on his right hand in a direction between the thumb and fore finger
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
           seal of my office this 23d day of July anno Domini 1830
