Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

^provided^ and whereas also upon the oath of Able Yowty of Caroline County that the said
negro man named Joseph for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his age as expressed in the said manumission
he was thirty seven years of age in My last; five feet six and a half inches
high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline county of a Black complexion the
end joint of his right fore finger is injured by a cut the scar of which appears on the
inside and on the ball of the finger he has a scar of a cancer as he says on the inside of his
right arm and immediately over the bone of the e^l^bow joint and no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 5th day of June Anno Domini 1830

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath been
made to me by ^a coloured man named^ John Friend for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of
a certificate of being ^free^ born and whereas also upon the oath of Peter Willis of
Caroline county that the said coloured man named John Friend for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that according to his own account he will be twenty one years
of age in August next five feet and eleven inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline county of a black complexion has a scar of a cut in
his left eyebrow and another scar of a ut on the right fore finger and lengthwise
the finger nearly over the hand joint of the finger and another scar of a cut on the
left hand in a direction between the thumb and fore finger extending up towards
the wrist and a very large scar on his left leg extending from a little below the
knee to the small of the leg and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public seal
           of my office this 13th day of July Anno Domini 1830
