Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas on the 6th day of
June 1854 John A Clough manumitted and set free a negro woman
called Eliza Gold to be free from the date aforesaid of said manumission
And whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman calling
herself Eliza Golde for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law and whereas
on the oath of Noah Seward that she is the same one manumitted in said
manumission   I do grant her this certificate   She is about 37 years of age five
feet & one inch ^hite^ & cause by a strike from a switch & has no other scar or mark and
is destitute of any eye brows
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name &
       (Seal)         affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 3.d
                         day of September Anno Domini 1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Julia Ann Armstrong
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to
law   And whereas on the oath of Etholinda Starkey was free born  I do therefore
grant this certificate   She is now about 27 years of age five feet & one inch high or
thereabout of a chesnutt complexion was born & raised in Caroline County and has
no marks or scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix
    (seal)             the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 3rd day of
                         September Anno Domini 1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Matilda Baynard hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law and whereas
on the oath of Benjamin Cainer has been proven that said Matilda Baynard
was free born.  I do therefore grant this certificate.  She is now about 20 years of age
five feet & three fourths of an inch high or thereabout of a black complexion was
born & raised in Caroline County and has one scar on the left side of her neck under
her jaw caused by a gathering and has no other notable mark or scar that
I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name &
             (Seal)      affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
                            8th day of September Anno Domini 1857
