Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County Sct:   Whereas Alice Lewis hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law
And wheras on the Oath of Samuel J. Carpenter has been proven that
said Alice Lewis was free born   I do therefor grant this certificate she
is now about eighteen years of age five feet and one inch high or there
about of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has no mark or scar that I have observed
                               In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                               my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
(seal)                       for Caroline County this 18th day of June Anno
                               Domini 1857                        Thomas F Garey Clerk

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:      Whereas John F Groce hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law and
whereas on the oath of Noah Turner has been proven that said John F Groce
was free born.   I do therefore grant this certificate.   He is now about twenty
three years of age five feet and eight inches hight or thereabout of a black
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has one scar on the
end of his first finger of the right hand and has no other notable mark or
scar that I have observed
                                        In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Seal)      name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
               this 20th day of June Anno Domini 1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:      Whereas Charles
W Lewis hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law.   And whereas on the oath of Noah Turner has been
proven that said Charles W Lewis was free born.   I do therefore grant
this certificate.   He is now about twenty one years of age five feet
six & one half inches high or thereabout of a yellow complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has one small scar on his forehead
and has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
                  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name & affix
(seal)          the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 20th
                  day of June Anno Domini 1857
