Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Caroline Francis Cason hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law and whereas on the oath of Gideon Harriss has been proven
that said Caroline Francis Cason was free born.  I do therefore
grant this certificate she is now about twenty two years of age
five feet five and three quarter inches high or there about of
a Chesnutt complexion was borned and raised in Caroline
County and has a large scar under her left eye and has no
other notable mark or scar that I have observed
(seal)            In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
                    name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court        
                    for Caroline County this 20th day of October
                    Anno Domini 1856

Caroline County to wit:      Whereas Rebecca Mitchell
hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to Law.   And whereas on the
oath of Washington Rowan has been proven that
said Rebecca Mitchell was free born.   I do
therefore grant this Certificate  She is now
about ^forty years of age^ 5 feet 2½ inches high or thereabouts
of a Mullatto Complexion was born & raised
in Caroline County and has no notable
marks or scars that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto
    (seal)    subscribe my name & affix the
                seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
                County this 18th Octo 1856
