Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Ellen Stanford has left Caroline County this 24th March 1841 with M.rs Tatem
for the purpose of waiting on M.rs Tatem until she may return home
                                                                                                          B


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas
Mary Johnson hath made application to me for a
certificate of her freedom agreeably to law   And whereas
on the oath of Purdue Keets that the said Mary Johnson
was free born   I do grant this Certificate:   She
is now about 30 years of age 5 feet 3 inches
high or thereabouts of a dark ^Black^ Chessnutt Complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County & has a small
scar near the 1.st joint of her left thumb
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (Seal)         my name and affix the seal of the Circuit
                      Court for Caroline County this 17.th day of
                      September A. D. 1856

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Samuel Dier hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   and whereas on the oath of Samuel
Shawn has been proven that said Samuel Dier
was free born.  I do therefore grant this cerficate he is
now about 21 years of age five feet five inches &
a quarter hight or ther about of a Chesnutt complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and has
no scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto
    (seal)            subscribe my name and affix the
                         seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
                         County this 26th day of september
                         Anno Domini 1856
