Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Mary
Dukes by deed of Manumission recorded on the
27th December 1834 did manumit a certain negro
man called Charles Gibson to be free from a   And
whereas Charles Gibson hath made application to
me for a certificate of his freedom and on the
oath of said Mary Dukes that he is the same man
mentioned in said manumission I do therefore
grant this certificate   He is now about 42 years
of age five feet six inches high or thereabouts
of a Mullatto Complexion and has the right
thumb deformed & two small scars between his eyebrows
and no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                subscribe my name and affix the
    (Seal)   seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
                County this 11.th day of June AD 1856


    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
                            Whereas Charles R Philips hath made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath of
N James H Scott has been proven that said negro
man was free born      I do therefore grant this
certificate:  He is now about 21 years of age 5 feet
10½ inches high or thereabouts of a dark Chesnutt
Complexion was born & raised in Caroline County &
has a large two small scars at the bottom of
each thumb & no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(Seal)    my name & affix the seal of the Circuit Court
             for Caroline County this 15th July 1856

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas
John H. Fountain hath made application to me
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
    And whereas on the oath of James H Fountain
has been proven that said negro man was free
born:   I do therefore grant this certificate:
He is now about 22 years of age 5 feet 8½
inches high or thereabouts of a black
complexion was raised in Caroline County
