Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
Whereas Anthony Thomas has made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom according to law.  And Whereas on the oath of
John Williams has proven that said negro man was liberated &
set free by the will of Rebecca Williams no won record in the
registry of Caroline County and that he knows this to be the same negro
man who was set free by his mother Rebecca Williams I do therefore
grant this certificate he is now about twenty three years of age of
dark complexion five feet ten inches high or thereabout has no notable
scars that I have observed
                                      In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                  my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
(seal)             Caroline County this 18.th day of Dec.r 1855
         cost $1.00

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit      Whereas John
Rich hath made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom according to law.   And whereas on the
oath of Abraham Griffith has been proven that said
negro man was free born.   I do therefore
grant this Certificate:   He is now about 24 years
of age five feet & nine inches high or
thereabouts of a black complexion was born &
raised in Caroline County & has a scar near
the right eye & a small scar on his left
wrist & has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (Seal)   my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
                Court for Caroline County this 1.st
                day of January A D 1855

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;
                Whereas William Turner hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law and whereas
on the oath of William Connelly has been proven that said
negro man was free born:  I do therefore grant this certificate
He is now about 31 years of age five feet five inches high or
their about of a Chesnutt complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has the second finger of the right
hand crippled & has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed                  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
