Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit  Whereas Ethalinda Hamilton
hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath of Charles
A. Milds has been proven that said negro woman was
free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate
She is now about 22 years of age ^five^ feet two & a half
inches high or thereabouts of a black Complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County & has a small
scar on her left wrist & has no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed
                In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(Seal)       my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
                Court for Caroline County this 21st day
                of August A. D. 1855

Caroline County to wit;  Whereas Charlotte Lewis hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law
and whereas on the oath of Rebecca E. Straughan has been
proven that said negro woman was free born.   I do therefore
grant this certificate  She is now about twenty one years of
age five feet and one inch high or thereabouts of a Mullatto
Complexion was born & raised in Caroline County & has
no notable marks or scars that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(seal)     name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court
             for Caroline County this 6.th day of September A D 1855

Caroline County to wit:      Whereas Henrietta Potter hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law   And whereas on the oath of Rebecca E. Straughn ^M Beard^
has being proven that said negro woman was free
born.   I do therefore grant this certificate; She is now
about 19 years of age five feet & four inches high or
thereabouts of a chesnutt Complexion was born &
raised in Caroline County & has a scar of a burn
on the little finger of her right hand & has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                      my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
                      Court for Caroline County this 16th
    (Seal)         day of Octo AD 1855
