Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Margaret White hath made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
    And whereas on the oath of Samuel Dunning ^Wm T Willis^ has been
proven that said negro woman was free born
    I do therefore grant this Certificate   She is now about
19 years of age five feet two & a half inches high or thereabout
of a black complexion was born & raised in
Caroline County & has a small scar on her noze
& no other notable marks or scars that I
    have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribed
                my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
(seal)       Court for Caroline County this 30.th day of
                June A D 1855

Caroline County to wit   Whereas Luther M Black Ident hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law.  And whereas on the oath of ^Eleanor Wilson^ W.m T. Willis
has been proven that said negro man was free born.   I do
therefore grant this certificate   She is now about 27
years of age five feet seven inches high or thereabouts of
a dark Chesnutt complexion was born & raised in
Caroline County & has a small scar in his right
eye brow & has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                         subscribe my name & affix the
                         seal of the Circuit Court for
    (seal)             Caroline County this 23.d day of
                         July A D 1855

        Caroline County (to wit)   Whereas Benjamin Colwell hath
    Made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts Law And whereas on the oath of J.ohn R. T. Saulsbury
he has proven that said negro was born free I do therefore grant
this Certificate  He is now about twenty two years of age or thereabouts
five feet eight high or thereabouts of a chesnutt Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County & has a Black mole or
scar on his right cheek opposite & near the right Eye also has a large
scar on the out side of his left knee and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed   In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
this 18.th day of Aug.t 1855
