Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Fanny Chase negro woman
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law  And whereas on the oath of Samuel
Dunning has been proven that said negro woman was free
born   I do therefore grant this certificate   She is
now about 35 years of age 5 feet and ½ inch high
or thereabouts of a dark chesnutt complexion was born
in Talbot & raised in Caroline County and has a small
scar on the back of her neck & has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
                name & affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
(seal)       Caroline County this twenty sixth day of May
                Anno Domini 1855

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  whereas Richard
Chambers by manumission recorded 25 August 1818 set
free a certain negro woman called Ann and her female
issue at 20 years of age and whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman calling herself Amanda Bailey for a
certificate of her freedom agreeably to law   and whereas on the oath of
Thomas Bell has been proven that the said Amanda is the
daughter of the said Ann & that Amanda Bailey is now free
I do therefore grant this certificate   she is now about 35 years of
age 5 feet 4½ inches hight or thereabout of a black complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County & has two scars caused
by a burn on the right arm near the elbow & has no other notable
mark or scars that I have observed
                               In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(seal)                       my name & affix the seal of the Circuit Court
                               for Caroline County this 29 May 1855

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Jacob Eaton hath made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
and whereas on the oath of John Turte has been proven that
said Jacob Eaton was free born   I do therefore grant this
certificate   He is now about 25 years of age five feet and
six inches high or thereabout of a black complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has a
large scar on the left arm caused by a burn and a small
scar near the right eye and has no other notable mark or
scar that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
                and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
                15.th day of June Anno Domini 1855   Thomas F Garey Clk
