Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit   Whereas Harriet Ann Hutchins hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law.   And whereas on the oath of John
R P Saulsburry has been proven that said negro woman was
free born.   I do therefore grant this Certificate. She is now
about 18 years of age four feet Eleven inches high or
thereabout of a dark mullatto Complexion born and raised
in Caroline County & has a large Scar just under her left eye
& has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                            subscribe my name & affix the
    (Seal)               seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
                            County this 28th April 1855

    Caroline County to wit   Whereas Ann Maria
Dickinson hath made application for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath
of John W Carty has been proven that said negro woman
was free born   I do therefore grant this Certificate
She is now about 25 years of age 5 feet 1½ inches
high or thereabouts of a black Complexion was born &
raised in Caroline County and has a large Scar
on his left cheek & a small one on the 3d finger of
the left hand & has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                      my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
    (Seal)         Court for Caroline County this 9.th day of
                      May Anno Domini 1855
