Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit.  Whereas
application hath been made to me by a negro man Named
Wiliam Ash for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts
of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mullato.s are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of John Malcomb of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named William Ash for whom this certificate
is maned was free born I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby Certify that from his own account he is now about forty three
years of age five feet Eleven inches high or thereabouts of a black Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid & has a ^two^ large scar
on his right leg just below the knee
                                     In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                                     my name and affix the seal of the Circuit
                                     Court for Caroline County this 3.rd day of
                                     April                         Tho.s F. Garey Clk of
                                                                 the C C C for C. County


Caroline County to wit; Whereas Isaac Lewis hath made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
law.  and whereas on the oath of Elizabeth Jump has been
proven that said Isaac Lewis   was free born   I do therefore
grant this certificate   He is now about 34 years of age five
feet five & a half inches high or thereabout of a Mullatto complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and has one
small scar on his nose and has no other notable mark
or scar that I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (Seal)               my name and affix the seal of the Circuit
                            Court for Caroline County this 6.th day of
                            April Anno Domini 1855
