Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline county to wit   Whereas Eliza Ann Sewell
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law.   And whereas on the oath of James H
Benwick has been proven that said Eliza Ann Sewill
was free born      I do therefore grant this Certificate   She
is now about 18 years of age five feet high or thereabouts
of a black complexion was born & raised in
Caroline County and has no notable marks
or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                      subscribe my name & affix
    (Seal)         the seal of the Circuit Court
                      for Caroline County this 29th
                      day of November A D 1854

Caroline County to wit.   Whereas Marcellus Rich hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeable to law.  And whereas on the oath of Abraham Griffith
it has been proven that said Marcellus Rich is no free and
has not for the last thirty years been claimed as a slave by any
one I do therefore grant this Certificate he is now in his
forty first year of his age five feet four and a half inches ^high^ or
thereabouts of a black Complexion was born and Raised in
Caroline County and has a notable scar on his left rist
and two scars on the calf of his right leg
                         In testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
                         my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
    (Seal)            Court for Caroline County this 2.nd day of
                         December A. D. 1854

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Edward Mason hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath of William
G. Pratt has been proven that said Edward Mason was
free born      I do therefore grant this Certificate   He is now
about 25 years of age five feet five inches high or thereabouts
of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has one small scar on the right forefinger and has
no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                         my name & affix the seal of the Circuit
                         Court for Caroline County this 16th day
                         of December 1854
