Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Nathaniel Tilghman hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably law   And whereas on the affirmation of Samuel
Dunning has been proved that said negro man was born free
I do therefore grant this Certificate   He is now about 24
years of age five feet nine inches high or thereabout
of a black Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a small scar no notable marks or
scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                      my name and affix the seal
    (Seal)         of the Circuit Court of Caroline County
                      this 3d day of March A D 1834

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas John F Johnson hath made
application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to law:
    And whereas on the application oath of Denwood Long has
been proven that said negro man was born free   I do therefore
grant this Certificate   He is now about 23 years of age 5 feet 8
inches high or thereabouts of a Mullatto Complexion and has a large
scar just below the right knee & has no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (Seal)         name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                      Caroline County this 10.th day of March 1854

Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Louisa Wright hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to
Law:   And whereas on the oath of Eleanah Willson has
been proven that the said Louisa Wright was free born
I do therefore grant this Certificate   She is now about 21
years of age 4 feet 2½ inches high or thereabouts of
a Mullatto of a black Complexion ^was born & raised in Caroline County^ and has a small scar
on the right cheek and has no other notable marks or scars
that I observed
                               In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                               subscribe my name and affix the
                               seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
                               County this 8.th day of May A D 1854
