Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
                            Whereas application hath been made
to me by Elizabeth Harriss negro woman for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath
of Lydia C. Stanton has been proven that said negro
woman was born free  I do therefore grant her this
certificate   She is about 25 years of age 5 feet 4
inches high or thereabouts of a ^mullatto^ yellow complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County and has
a small black Mole on the back of the right hand
and a small scar on the left wrist caused by a
cut and has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto
    (Seal)         subscribe my name and
                      affix the seal of the Circuit
                      Court for Caroline County this
                      29th day of November A D 1853

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
                                  Whereas Application hath been made to
me by Elizabeth Satterfield negro woman for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to Law   And whereas on the
oath of of Elcanah Willson has been proven that said
negro woman was born free.   I do therefore grant her
this certificate   She is about 18 years of age 5 feet
2½ inches high or thereabouts of a light Chesnutt
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a small Scar Caused by a burn on the back
of the right hand and no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
    (seal)       my name and affix the Seal of the
                   Circuit Court for Caroline County
                   this 7.th day of December A. D. 1853

to me by a negro man for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to Law.   And whereas on the oath of
John E. Starkey has been proven that said negro man was
born free.  I do therefore grant him this Certificate
