Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit.  Whereas William H Harris negro
man hath made application to me for his Certificate of freedom agreeably to Law; And
whereas on the affirmation of William T. Long has been proven that said negro
man was born free.  I do therefore grant him this Certificate.  He is about 20 yr
of age 5 feet 10¼ inches high or thereabouts of a dark complexion with a
notable scar lower part of right Cheek Was born free and raised in Caroline Co
                                              In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
             (Seal)                        affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                                              Caroline County this 25th June 1853
                                                                                  Tho F Garey Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Charles
H. Groce negro man hath made application to me for a
certificate of his freedom agreeably to law; And Whereas
on the affirmation ^oath^ of David S. Truit has been proven
that said negro man was born free   I do therefore
grant him this Certificate   He is about 23 years of
age 5 feet 5½ Inches high or thereabouts of a black ^light mulatto^
Complexion was born & raised in Caroline County
and has a scar on the back of the left hand & another
on the back of the right hand
                   In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe
    (Seal)      my name and affix the seal of the Circuit
                   Court for Caroline County this 24th day of
                   August Anno Domini 1853
                                                       Thomas F. Garey Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas
Christy Ann Sampson negro woman hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law; And whereas on the oath of
W.m Loockerman has been proven that said negro
woman was born free.      I do therefore grant her
this Certificate      She is about 23 years of age
5 feet 4½ inches high or thereabouts of a light
mulatto Complexion was born & raised in
Caroline County and has a small scar near the right
corner of the right eye & a moul on the left side of
the neck & has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                   subscribe my name and affix the
    (Seal)      seal of the Circuit Court for
                   Caroline County this 30.th day
                   of August A. D. 1853
