Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas
David Todd & wife by manumission dated the 3d March 1849
set free a certain negro man called James Bryan; And
whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man
calling himself James Bryan for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law; and who has been proven to be the same
mentioned in said Manumission upon the oath of David
Todd.      I do therefore grant this Certificate:   He is about
40 years old 5 feet 7½ inches high or thereabouts of a
black complexion was born & raised in Caroline County &
has a small scar on ^near^ the corner of his right eye and has
no other notable marks or Scars that I have observed
                     In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (Seal)        name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
                     for Caroline County this 31st day of
                     May A D. 1853

       State of Maryland Caroline County sct:  Whereas William H. Green
negro man hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to Law.  And Whereas on the oath of Purnell Todd has been
proven that said negro man was born free.  I do therefore
grant this certificate   He is about 26 years old 5 feet 6
inches high or thereabouts of a dark complexion was born & raised
in Caroline County and has a scar on the back of his right
hand and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
       (Seal)      name and affix the seal of the Circuit
                      Court for Caroline County this 14th day of
                      June Anno Domini 1853

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas William
H Green Leah Wayman negro woman hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law.  And
whereas on the oath of Mrs. Deborah Faulkner has been proven
that said negro ^wo^man was born free   I do therefore grant
this Certificate   She is about 28 years of age five feet and
three inches high or thereabouts of a dark chesnutt complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and has a scar on her
left arm between the Elbow & wrist and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (Seal)         name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
                      for Caroline County this 18th day of June A D. 1853
