Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
                   Whereas application hath been made by a negro man
named James H. Loockerman for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to Law         and whereas upon the oath of John L
Connelly Henry Willson has been proven that the said negro
man was born free   I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is about 27 years of age 5 feet 5 inches high or thereabouts
of a black Complexion and has a large scar between the
Joint of the thumb & wrist for the left hand & a small one
in the right eye brown & has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed.  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (seal)                         name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
                                     for Caroline County this 28th day of February
                                     Anno Domini 1853

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas
application hath been made to me by a negro ^wo^man
named Margaretta H Loockerman for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to Law   And whereas on the
oath of J. R. T Saulsbury has been proven that said
negro woman was born free      I do therefore grant
this Certificate she is about Eighteen years of age 5 feet
4½ inches high or thereabouts of a bright Complexion and
has two small round black moulds & scars on the left arm
wrist near the Joint and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe
                      my name and affix the Seal of the
       (seal)       Circuit Court for Caroline County
                      this 6.th Day of April Anno Domini 1853

    The State of Maryland Caroline County sct.  Whereas application has
been made to me by a negro woman named Martha Caldwell for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to Law:  and whereas an affirmation of Samuel Dunning
has been Proven that the said negro woman was born free   I do therefore
grant this Certificate She is about by Years of age 5 feet ¾ inches high
or thereabouts of dark chesnut Complexion and has no notable or peculiar
marks or scars
                         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my hand and affix
       (seal)          the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
                         27th day April A. D. 1853
