Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

observed      In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                subscribe my name and affix the seal
    (seal)    of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
                 this 26th day of June Anno Domini 1852

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named Elisha Cephas
for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly
in such Case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon
the obtention of a certificate of being free born.  And whereas
also upon the oath of John G. Faulkner Ennalls Hubbard
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man fro
whom this certificate is made was free born.   I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from
his own account his is now about twenty two years of
age five feet seven and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a black dark Complexion was born and raised in
Caroline County aforesaid & has several large scars between
the knee and ankle on the left leg & has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                      my name and affix the seal of the
    (seal)          Circuit Court for Caroline County
                      this 6.th day of July Anno Domini

John Henry Cooper for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made
and provided by which said acts free negroes and
mullattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
And whereas also upon the oath of William Alls
that the said negro man was free born   I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he is now about twenty
two years of age five feet Nine & half inches high or
thereabouts of a light chesnutt Complexion born
& raised in Caroline County and has a large scar
on the back of his right hand near the thumb
