Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named George Woolford
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such case made and provided by which said acts free
negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
And whereas also upon the oath of Thomas H Stack of
Caroline County that the said negro man named George
Woolford for whom this Certificate is made was free born
that from his own account he is now about twenty four
years of age five feet ten and one half inches high or
thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid a has a natural mark
(a small portion of the hair near the top of his head being
white contrary to the colour of his hair) and has no other
notable marks and scars that I have observed
                        In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                        my name and affix the seal of the Circuit
    (seal)            Court for Caroline County this 25th day of
                         May Anno Domini 1852

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas
heretofore to wit on the 22.d day of June 1852 a
certain Sarah Countiss & others did manumit and
set free a certain negro man named Charles Hines
to be free immediately   And the said Charles
Hines having made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such Case made and provided and whereas
also upon the oath of James Swann of Caroline
County that the said negro boy ^man^ named Charles
Hines for whom this Certificate is made is the
same as mentioned in the manumission aforesaid
I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby certify that from his own account he is
now about thirty two years of age five feet
seven inches high or thereabouts of a black
complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County & has a large scar by a cut on the back
of the right hand just above the thumb
and another on his right wrist caused by a
burn & has no other marks or scars that I have
