high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in
Caroline ^County^ has a small scar of a cut a little above the wrist on his right
arm and another scar of a cut of an axe on his right leg opposite the
lower part of the calf and no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(seal)   the public seal of my office this 23d day of December Anno

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a coloured man named Sampson Satterfield
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the
Oath of Daniel Reed of Caroline County that the said Sampson Satterfield
for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that according to his
own account he is thirty four years of age or thereabouts about five
feet four and three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a black
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has no notable
marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
            the public seal of my office this 27th day of February Anno

to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a
certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Thomas F Bourke
of Caroline County that the said coloured boy named Edward Stanford for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby ^certify^ that from his farthers account he was nineteen years of age the
