Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland   Caroline County to wit   Be it
remembered that on th   Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named John Tho Sarah Freeman
for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of
assembly in such case made and provided by which said
acts free negroes and mulattos are permitted to travel out of
this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born  And whereas also upon the oath of John G Faulkner William J
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Sarah Freeman for whom this certificate is
made was free born   I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby Certify that from her own account
she is now about thirty five years of age five feet six
inches high or thereabouts of a chesnutt complexion
and has a small scar on the back of the left hand
near the thumb occasioned by a burn and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (Seal)   my name and affix the seal of Caroline
                County Court this 1st day of October AD

for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of
assembly in such case made and provided by which said
acts free negroes and mullattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born   And whereas also upon the oath of
Alexander P. Sorden of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named Stansbury Cannon for whom
this Certificate is made was free born   I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from
his own account he is now about twenty two years of
age five feet nine and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a Chesnutt complexion was born in sussex
County Delaware and partly raised in Caroline County Maryland
and has a small scar of a Cut above the right eye and
another small scar on his upper lip and has no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(seal)     name and affix the seal of Caroline County
             Court this 20th day of November Anno
             Domini 1851
