Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

          State of Maryland Caroline County to wit.   Whereas
heretofore to wit on the First day of August Eighteen
hundred and eight a certain Abraham Jump of Caroline
County by Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged
and recorded among the Land Records of Caroline County did
manumit & set free a certain negro woman named
Melasa and her female issue when the should arrive
at to the age of Eighteen years and a certain negro woman
named Adaline Fountain the issue of the above named
Melasa having made application to me for a certificate of her
Freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made
and provided:  And whereas also from my own personal
knowledge that the said negro woman named Adeline Fountain
for whom this certificate is made ^is free^ I do therefore grant her
said application and hereby certify that she is now about
twenty one years of age five feet high or thereabouts of a
chesnutt Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a scar over the right eye occasioned by a
cut and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
          my name and affix the seal of Caroline County
(seal)  Court this Fourth day of December Anno Domini

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named
Garrison Hamilton for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by
which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born  And whereas also upon the
oath of John Thawley of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro man named Garrison Hamilton
for whom this Certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby
certify that from his own account he is now
about twenty five years of age five feet six and one
half inches high or thereabouts of a Black Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and
has a large scar about ^near^ the Joint of the right thumb
and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
          my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
(seal)      for Caroline County this 17th day of
                February A D. 1852
