said negro man named John Charles Downes for whom
this Certificate is made was free born   I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that from his own
account he is now about twenty eight years of age
five feet Nine & one half inches high or thereabouts of a
chesnutt Complexion was born and raised in
Caroline County aforesaid eyes of a gray Color and
has no Notable marks or scars that I have observed
                     In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (seal)         my name and affix the seal of Caroline
                     County Court this 15th 2d day of
                     August ^Sept^ Anno Domini 1846   1851

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas
a certain William Potter ^of Caroline County^ heretofore to wit on the second
day of August 1841 by deed of Manumission duly
executed and recorded among the Land Record Books of
Caroline County did Manumit and set free a certain
negro woman named Harriet Turner ^Betsey^ to be free on the
9th ^first^ day of October 1 January 1851 and the said Betsey
(now calling herself Elizabeth Smith) having made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom in
such case made and provided and whereas also
upon the oath of Thomas H. Williams of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Elizabeth
Smith for whom this Certificate is made is the
same person mentioned in the said Manumission
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
certify that from her own account she is now
about thirty five years of age five feet five & one
half inches high or thereabouts of a black Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has
a scar of a cut on her left jaw and another
on the right side of her chin and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto
(Seal)          subscribe my name and affix the
                   seal of Caroline County Court
                   this 20th day of September Anno
                   Domini 1851
