Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas a
certain Thomas Straughn ^of Caroline County^ heretofore to wit on the 27
day of March Eighteen hundred and forty eight by deed of
manumission duly executed & acknowledged and recorded
among the land Records of Caroline county do manumit
and set free a certain negro woman named Nessy Curtis
to be free for the first day of May Eighteen hundred and
by which said acts free negroes and mullattoes are permitted
And whereas also upon the oath of Nessy Curtis
Robert Clendening of Caroline County that the said
negro woman named Nessy Curtis for whom this Certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said
manumission I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account
she is now about 36 thirty six years of age five feet
two inches high or thereabouts of of a black complexion
^was^ born in Queen Anns & raised in Caroline County
and has a large scar on her left cheek and a small
one on her right wrist and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                      subscribe my name and affix
(seal)              the seal of Caroline County
                      court this 10th day of June Anno

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas a certain George
and William Sparks heretofore to wit on the 19th day of
January 1828 by deed of Manumission duly executed &
recorded among the Land Records of Caroline County did
manumit and set free a certain negro man ^boy^ named
John to be free on the 1st of January 1845   And the
said John (Now calling himself John scribner) having
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made
and provided   And whereas also upon the oath of
William H Downes of Caroline County that the said
negro man named John Scribner for whom this Certificate
is made was free born is the same person mentioned
in the said manumission   I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that from his own
account he is now about 36 years of age
