Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas a
application hath been made to me by a negro ^wo^man named
Eliza Green for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the
acts of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mullatoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a
certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of John G Faulkner ^Purdue Kutts^ of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro woman named Eliza Green for whom
this certificate is made was free born   I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that
from her own account she is now about forty
years of age five feet five inches high or thereabouts
of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid & has a large scar on the right
arm occasioned by a burn & a small scar on the
left arm      both below the elbow also a smal scar
or mark on the forehead and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
    (seal)               my name and affix the seal of Caroline
                           county Court this 29th day of July

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas a certain Thom
Ebby Stevens heretofore to wit on the Tenth day of March 1846
by deed of Manumission duly executed & acknowledged and
recorded among the said Records of Caroline County did Manumit
and set free a certain negro man named harry to be free from the
date of said Manumission and the said the said Harry
(now Calling himself Henry Friend) having made application to me
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such case made and provided    And whereas also upon the
oath of Robert Clendening ^Poulson E Hulbard^ of Caroline county that the said negro
woman named Henry Friend for whom this certificate is made
the same person mentioned in the said Manumission   I
do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he is now about thirty six
years of age five feet two inches high or thereabouts of a
Chesnutt complexion was born and raised in Caroline
county and has a small scar over the corner of the right
eye and has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed         In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                      subscribe my name and affix the seal
    (seal)          of Caroline County Court this 12th day of
                       August A D 1851
