Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named George H. Purnell
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of
Assembly in such case made and provided by which said
acts free negroes and mullattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born   And whereas also upon the oath of ^Richard Jones^
John R. Willis of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
negro woman named George H. Purnell for whom this
certificate was free born   I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own account
he is now about twenty three years of age five feet ten &
three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid &
has a large scar on the ankle of his ch right leg and
has no other Notable marks or scars that I have
observed                  In Testimony whereof I hereunto
                         subscribe my name & affix the seal
                         of Caroline County Court this 29th
    (Seal)            day of April Anno Domini 1851

woman calling herself Sarah E Ross ^Rossetta Green^ for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in
such case made and provided by which said acts free
negroes and Mulattoes are permitted to travel out of
this state upon the obtention of certificate of being
free born and whereas also upon the oath of Purdue
Ruts of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
negro woman named Rosetta Green for whom this
certificate is made was free born.   I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that from her
own account she is now about eighteen ^twenty five^ years of age
five feet one ^three^ and a quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a black complexion was born and raised in
Caroline County aforesaid and has a natural mark
on the back part of her head and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
                   my name and affix the seal of Caroline
(seal)          County Court this 3d day of June
                   Anno Domini 1851
