Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

          State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
       Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man
    named Philip Kenedy for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
    to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by
    which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born   And Whereas also upon the oath of John W. Bradley of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named
Philip Kenedy for whom this Certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he is now about thirty three years
of age Five feet nine & a half inches high or thereabouts of a
dark chesnutt Complexion born and raised in Caroline
County and has a large scar on the wrist ^inside^ of his left arm
hand has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed near the little finger which said finger and the
finger next to it are crooked and that no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                               In Testimony whereof I hereunto
       (Seal)               subscribe my name and affix
                               the seal of Caroline County Court
                               this 21st day of May A. D. 1850

named Adaline Groce for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born   And whereas also upon the oath of William H Donner
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named
Adaline Groce was for whom this certificate is made was
free born    I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that from her own account she is now
about twenty two years of age six feet & one half inch high
or thereabouts of a Chesnutt Complexion ^was^ born and raised
in Caroline County and has a small scar on the right
corner of the left eyebrow & also another small one on
the knuckle of the left eyebrow third finger of the right
hand and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(Seal)   my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
                this 29th of May A. D. 1850      James H Fountain Clerk
