by a burn & also has lost the nail from the
thumb of her right hand and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto
(Seal)             subscribe my name and affix
                      the seal of caroline County
                      Court this 13th day of February
                      A. D. 1850

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named John Samuel
Ash for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts
of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulattos are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born  And whereas also upon the oath
of John Whitly of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro man named Samuel Ash for whom this
Certificate is made was free born   I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify from his own
account he is now about twenty six years of age
Five feet Eleven inches high or thereabouts of a dark
chesnutt complexion born and raised in Caroline
County and has a large scar on the wrist of
his left arm and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto
(Seal)                subscribe my name and affix the
                         seal of Caroline County Court this
                         5th day of August ^April^ Anno Domini 1850
