Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born and whereas also upon the oath of Eliza Atkinson of Caroline
County that the said Coloured man named Griffin Steward for whom this
Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age
the Eighth day of June last five feet three and a half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County of a dark mulatto complexion
has a small scar in the middle of his forehead nearly perpendicular and
another scar of a cut on the middle finger of the left hand between the
hand and middle joints and another large scar nearly in the shape of a
crescent on his left knee caused by a kick from a horse and several other
small scars on the same leg and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
(seal)   affix the public seal of my office this 21st day of September anno

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a coloured man named Eli Stanford for a certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out
of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Eli Chance of caroline county that the said
coloured man named Eli ^Eli^ Stanford for whom this certificate is made was
free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he will be twenty two years of age some time
in the month of July next five feet six inches high or thereabouts was
born and raised in caroline county and of a mulatto complexion has a
tolerable large scar on his left leg a little below the knee joint and
another small round scar a little below the knee on his right leg and
no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
            public seal of my office this 1st day of October anno Domini 1829
