Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

the 14th day of July last was born and raised in Caroline County
five feet seven and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County of a black Complexion has a large natural
mark on the right side of his right breast near the arm pit and a scar
of a burn across the back of the middle finger of his right hand between the
hand and middle joints and the end joint of his left fore finger stiff and useless
and another scar of a burn on the outside of the top of his right foot and
has a lump on the right side of his neck which he says was caused by
a burn and which he is now cutting off by trying a horse hair round it
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
           public seal of my office this 25th day of August Anno Domini

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a little negro girl named Catherine Wright for a
Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made
and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of Nicholas Fountain of Caroline County
that the said little negro girl named Catharine Wright for whom this Certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her fathers account she will be eight years of
age some time in November next three feet two ten and a half inches
high or thereabouts of a black complexion nearly black was born in Caroline
County and has a large scar of a burn on the right wrist joint and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
           public seal of my office this 31st day of august anno Domini
